Only a licenced and qualified electrician is able to formally certify that all electrical work performed meets the standards set out by Australian and local regulatory bodies.

What is a Certificate of Compliance?

Your electrician, too, has an obligation: to provide an Electrical Certificate of Compliance in Victoria, where required, following electrical work for your tenants in your rental properties

Failure to do so can lead to a number of penalties for an electrician, including:

  • Loss of licence
  • Damaged reputation

What’s Included in a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work?

A Certificate of Compliance for electrical work certifies that work undertaken meets safety standards and regulatory laws

It includes:

  • The electrician’s name, business name, and license number
  • The name of the person who booked the electrician (the customer) and the location at which the work was performed (for example, your rental property’s address)
  • Detailed information about the work performed

Your electrician will then date and sign the certificate, and issue you with a copy. In most cases, you will be able to request an online electrical certificate of compliance in order to keep a digital copy rather than a hard copy.

Your electrician must be able to provide you with a Certificate upon request. For recent electrical work, you can go back to your electrician to request one, and they have 30 days to provide it.
